Avaiki Cave

Niue / The Pacific

The historic Avaiki cave has been described as the top site to visit in Niue.  It is a place that seems to be taken out of a dream. The water is a shade of turquoise and the walls shimmer with a jewel-like purple hue.   This is where the first canoe arrived on Niue.  Historically, Avaiki’s two pools were used – one for kings and the other for servants.  Inside the King’s cave, there are amazing formations of stalactite that look like statues or sculptures to decorate the King’s royal bathe cave.  The best time to visit is at low tide.  Small holes between the rocks are the homes of many forms of life, especially invertebrates.
