The High Court and Registry was formerly Barracoon and was so named as it was a gaol in which slaves were detained. It stands on the Bayfront of Roseau facing out to sea. The Magistrate’s court is on the ground floor and the High Court meets upstairs three times a year, during Assizes. There is a door through which prisoners passed, on their way to be sold or even executed.
