Point of Interest

Boer Cemetery

Saint Helena / Africa

The Boer Cemetery commemorates the 200 Boers who died in St. Helena as prisoners of war. The cemetery is located in a peaceful wooded valley. During the Boer War (1899-1902), nearly 6,000 Boers were shipped to Saint Helena. This cemetery has since been restored. A team of sailors spent many days repainting, mapping and renumbering the graves which lie on this hillside. This involved fifty members of the ship’s company and two hundred islanders. This restoration enables visitors today to respect and commemorate those buried here.
