Cape Town Stadium on Fritz Sonnenburg Road, close to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Originally known as Green Point Stadium, it became the home for Cape Town’s Premier Soccer League and for the South African Sevens rugby tournament. Construction began in 2007 and it was officially handed over to the city on 14 December 2009. The first game to be played there was a Cape Town derby between Ajax Cape Town and Santos on 23 January 2010.
