Adamstown Church

Pitcairn Islands / The Pacific

Adamstown Church, on the Square, is the only church on the island.  It is also known as the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  It was built after a successful Seventh-day Adventist mission to Pitcairn in the 1890s, during which most of the inhabitants (of whom there were very few) were converted to that denomination of Protestantism.

There is no state religion on Pitcairn.  This is because no laws about its establishment were passed by the local government. However, religion was important in shaping Pitcairn society.  In recent years, the church population has declined, and as of 2000, only eight of the then forty islanders were regular churchgoers.  However, more people attend on special occasions.
