Falklands Legislative Assembly

Falkland Islands / Americas

The Legislative Assembly have offices in Gilbert House.  It is a unicameral legislature, which came into force in 2009, replacing the earlier Legislative Council which had existed since 1845.  There are eight elected members and two ex-officio ones – the Chief Executive and the Director of Finance.  And there is a Speaker.  The Commander British Forces and the Attorney General can also take part in debates but cannot vote.  The debates normally take place in the Court and Assembly Chamber in the Town Hall.

There has to be a general election every four years, the most recent one having been held on 9 November 2017.
