Great Britain Mizzenmast

Falkland Islands / Americas

The British Mizzen Mast was at the stern of HMS Great Britain (1843).  The steamship was the first of its kind to be constructed, screw propelled and from iron, in Bristol in 1843 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.  Badly damaged in a Cape Horn gale in 1886, the vessel lay for many years at Sparrow Cove in the outer harbour of Stanley before being towed back to Bristol where she was restored to former glory.
