Holy Cross Cathedral is the main Catholic Church in Honiara and dates from 1957. It is on the site of the spot where the Spanish explorer, Álvaro de Mendaña is said to have planted a cross on his arrival in the Solomon Islands. There was an earlier Catholic mission built in 1845 and a brick from that building is incorporated in the façade of the present cathedral. Catholicism is also the main religion on the islands. This site is a lovely place of worship which also offers views across Iron Bottom Sound. Built-in a local style it has some interesting carvings of the Stations of the Cross. The sculpture monument in front of the church is also well designed. The cathedral is open and easy to access.
