Independence Monument

Uganda / Africa

The Independence Monument is six metres tall.  The monument situated in the heart of the capital between the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Grand Imperial Hotel and Standard-Chartered Bank, is one of the most distinctive landmarks of Uganda.  The Uganda Independence Monument was constructed by the former British Colonial Government just before Uganda celebrated its first independence on Tuesday 9 October 1962.  The monument depicts a man raising a child to touch the sky, representing a new country, free from colonialism.
