The Iziko South African Museum is a magnificent building in the Company Garden. It was founded in 1825 by Lord Charles Somerset (1767-1831), son of the 5th Duke of Beaufort, and Governor of the Cape Colony from 1814 to 1826. It has been on its present site since 1897 and specializes in African zoology, palaeontology and archaeology. It contains more than 1.5 million specimens of scientific importance.
