Martin Place is a pedestrian mall in the central business district, described as ‘the civic heart of Sydney’, the equivalent of a city’s ceremonial centra. It is a wide cobblestone street, a short walk from the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is flanked by the Parliament of New South Wales at one end and the Sydney GPO (built-in 1863) on the other. This site is a nice place to walk and spend time with many cafés and restaurants nearby. The Reserve Bank of Australia and other major commercial banks are located here. It is frequently used in high-end film and television productions. In earlier times conscription took place here, and in 1927 the city’s Cenotaph was erected here in memory of those who died in the First World War.
