Mercu Dirgahayu 60 is a gilded fountain monument dedicated to the Sultan of Brunei. The current Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, has been involved in a lot of controversies. He was condemned in 2019 for declaring that acts of homosexuality are punishable by death of stoning. The Sultan is the richest and most powerful man in Brunei. This monument is one of many tributes to the Sultan of Brunei that is scattered around Bandar Seri Begawan. Mercu Dirgahaya 60 was erected in 2006 to celebrate the Sultan’s 60th birthday. It is called “Mercu Dirgahaya 60” meaning “Long Life, Your Highness 60 Monument”. The tall bent column shows the number 60 in Arabic. At night the monument is illuminated.
