National Museum

Papua New Guinea / The Pacific

The National Museum was built in 1975 and opened to the public in 1977.  It is a fantastic museum which provides a unique insight into the many nations that make up this beautiful country, their customs, crafts, art and history with artefacts coming from 22 provinces.  The earliest collection relates to the administration of Sir William MacGregor.  Collections cover archaeology, contemporary arts, modern history and natural history.

Despite not being a huge museum, visitors spend many hours here intrigued by the high standard of local exhibits.  Its collection of primitive art has even been referred to as better than that in the New York Metropolitan Museum.
