Praça dos Trabalhadores is a famous central landmark opposite the famous Caminho de Ferro Station and pays homage to the Portuguese and Mozambicans who died in the First World War. One standout feature is the Monument to the Mortos of the First World War, created by the Portuguese sculptor, Ruy Roque Gameiro (1906-35) in collaboration with the architect Veloso Reis, who jointly won a prize to undertake the design in 1931. This massive statue of a woman on the top of a large plinth was unveiled in 1935.
