The United Seamans Club was opened as a downtown restaurant to cater for marines, who were not members of the Brit Club, admitting anyone, be they British, G.l., Contractor, Merchant Mariner, Flip, or Moslem, on payment of a $10 card. It was also frequented by senior rankers who disapproved of ‘all-ranks’ activities. Rock and Roll was on offer. Women also flocked to the club, because it was ‘all-ranks’, and generally they felt more comfortable there.
