St.Francis Xavier Cathedral

St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral is the Catholic Cathedral on West Hill.  The first Cathedral was built in 1885 under the supervision of Father O’Keefe, the resident priest, in 1885.  The building work was delayed by a serious storm on 1 September 1886, in which one of the workmen was killed and the roof, doors and walls were damaged.  But the building was repaired and the first Mass celebrated there on 1 November 1866.

The present Cathedral was dedicated on 31 March 2004.
