The Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea is also in the Waigani district. It has been the highest court since September 1975. It is a court of record, and must therefore keep a record of the proceedings done before it and give a written decision on every proceeding. The Supreme Court was established as a superior court of record under Papua New Guinea’s Constitution. It is made up of the Chief Justice, Deputy Chief Justice and the judges of the National Court.
In 2015 new buildings were constructed to include a 5-level court and judiciary building containing 14 new courtrooms, and a three-storey administrative support building. These were designed and built by the architects, Peddle Thorp.
