The Sydney Theatre Company is based in the Wharf Theatre at Dawes Point, previously an abandoned wharf. They also perform in the Roslyn Packer Theatre and at the Opera House. The company was formed in December 1978 following the closure of the Old Tote Theatre Company. Elizabeth Butcher set up the new theatre and found the premises at the Wharf Theatre, which was officially handed over on 13 December 1984.
