The Tunduru Botanical Gardens have survived in the old city centre since 1885. They were designed by the British gardener, Thomas Honney. Massive tropical trees provide shade and there is a small pond and trails which are surrounded by diverse vegetation. Birds and bats have also chosen the garden to be their home. It is a very tranquil place, excellent for a walk in the morning, though suitable for running as the garden is rather small. They contain tennis courts belonging to the Mozambique Tennis Federation.
