The War Memorial Tower is located at the centre of the town between the Capital Hill and Area 18 residential area. It is set in a square shape, with the statue of Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the first President, towering over the centre. The Memorial Tower was opened on Remembrance Sunday, 11 November 2007 and commemorates the soldiers who died in both wars, as well as earlier wars, when men served in the King’s African Rifles. Malawi commemorates Remembrance Day on the second Sunday of November, when soldiers of the Malawi Defence force march to Memorial Square to pay their respects to the fallen.
