Albuoy’s Point

Albuoy’s Point is a popular dock from which many fishing boats and cruises depart.  It is reached via Point Pleasant Park, a small public park which contains a memorial to the crew of HMS Jervis Bay, who perished in one of the Second World War’s most heroic acts.   On 5 November 1940 Jervis Bay was escorting a convoy of 37 freighters from Halifax, Nova Scotia when she was intercepted by the German battleship, Admiral Scheer.  Captain Edward Fegen ordered the convoy to disperse and directed Jervis Bay directly into the path of the German battleship.  By so doing, he enabled the convoy to escape, but his ship was sunk with considerable loss of life.
