The Royal Botanic Garden

The Royal Botanic Garden was established in 1816 and is the oldest botanic garden and scientific institution in Australia.  It inclines gently amidst palm trees and gum trees and is home to an outstanding collection of plants from all over the world, and in particular, focuses on Australia and the South Pacific.  Many trees and shrubs have been imported from England.  It covers 30 hectares at Farm Cove, near the eastern fringe of the central business district.  It was designed by Charles Moore (1820-1905), an Australian botanist, and by Joseph Maiden (1859-1925), a British botanist who made a major contribution to the knowledge of Australian fauna.
