Cast Iron Urinal

The Cast Iron Urinal stands on a footpath at 23A George Street, on Dawes Point.  It is a free-standing cast-iron structure on a concrete hob base.  It is partially opened to the sky with an exterior of decorative panelled screens with open decorative iron fretwork.  Inside there are two urinal bays.  The urinal is a rare example of a public utility from the 1880s.  It was placed there by the City Council to improve sanitation and public health in 1880 and is still in use today.  It combines the purpose of a urinal with being a piece of decorative street furniture.
