Cavvanagh Iguana Cave

The Cavanagh Cave (sometimes called Kavanaugh or Cavana), near North Hill Village, is considered the safest and most scenic of Anguilla’s caves.  It was made of limestone and is well lit by a central hole with a tree growing through it and there are colonies of cactus over 10 feet high.   In the 19^th century, it was mined for phosphate and it is believed that it was the most likely source of the 1868 shipment of phosphate, containing the fossil bones of a species called Amblyriza Inundata.  It was confirmed by historical research that 125,000 years ago a rodent the size of a bear lived here.
