Chapel Market

Originally named Chapel Street, street vendors began selling their products in the 19th century here, much to the disgruntlement of residents. It didn’t take long for a regular market to appear, and by 1879 the street was officially designated as a street market. John James Sainsbury opened his first Sainsbury store in Islington at 48 Chapel Street, a chain which has now grown in to a supermarket empire, being now known as one of the big four of UK grocery markets. By 1890 popularity of the Chapel Street markets had grown so that it was now one of the two largest markets in the Islington area. The local Council re-named the street Chapel Market in 1936.Split equally between food stalls and merchandise, the Chapel Markets are open Tuesday – Saturday from 9am to 5pm and protected as a Conservation Area under the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme.
