Embassy Park

Embassy Park, on Independence Avenue, is a cemetery, more like a tiny hamlet.  It houses mausoleums for three former Heads of State and the grave of President Kaunda.  In front of each mausoleum is a red paver.  The park is a popular heritage site and attracts about 6,000 visitors every year.  

The five Presidents buried here are:  

Levy Mwanawsa (1948-2008), who collapsed at a summit in Egypt and died two months later in a military hospital in Paris.  

Frederick Chiluba (1943-2011), whose mausoleum has ten pillars round it to represent his ten years in office.  The walkway leading to it is in the shape of a necktie, denoting his sense of style.

Michael Sata (1937-2014), whose mausoleum was built in the style of King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem, and finished in 2018.

Kenneth Kaunda (1924-2021), who does not have a mausoleum yet, but whose grave is inscribed with the words: ‘One Zambia One Nation’.

Rupiah Bwezani Banda (1937-2022), was buried here very recently.
