Greenmarket Square

Greenmarket Square is a historic square, in the city bowl area, first designed in 1696.  It has been variously a slave market, a parking lot and a flea market selling African souvenirs, crafts and curios.  During the era of Apartheid, it was frequently the location for political protests, being near the Parliament building.  Originally fresh produce was sold here, and there was a fountain for accessible drinking water.  A burgher watch house was built but later demolished to make way for the Old Town House.   The square was pedestrianized in the early 2000s and in 2016 it was taken over by the Central City Improvement District with the aim of improving the trading stores.
