The Independence Memorial Museum

The Independence Memorial Museum is a five-storey historical museum, built in the North Korean socialist realist style.  It focuses on the anti-colonial resistance and the national liberation movement of Namibia. The museum is located on Robert Mugabe Avenue and was designed and built by Mansudae Overseas Projects, a North Korean firm.  The museum was inaugurated by President Hifikepunye Pohamba (b.1936) on 21 March 2014, the 24th anniversary of Independence.  It is flanked by two statues: the Sam Nujoma Statue, celebrating Sam Nujoma (born 1929), the anti-apartheid activist and three times Presidents of the country,  and the Genocide Statue (which commemorates ‘untold hardships and sufferings’ at the hands of the Scutztruppe between 1904 and 1907), also built by Mansudae.  The Sam Nujoma Statue sits on the site of the German-era Reiterdenkmal equestrian statue, which was moved from here to the Alte Fesse in 2009, and relocated there in 2010.
