Maritime Museum

Jersey / Europe

The Maritime Museum is an interactive museum at New North Quay beside St Helier’s historic harbour.  It was constructed as part of an ongoing process to make improvements to St Helier Harbour in the 1880s. Here it is possible to see, hear and even smell the exhibits.  These tell the story of Jersey’s maritime history.  The experiences include learning about the tides or how to design and float a ship, discovering the island’s myths and its seafaring and shipbuilding activities, the stories of privateers and pirates, and even experiencing the force of a gale.

There is the Occupation Tapestry Gallery, which displays the award-winning Occupation Tapestry, woven by Islanders to celebrate the 50th 5 anniversary of the liberation. It has 13 richly colourful panels, depicting the travails of life under military rule.
