The National Gandhi Museum (or Gandhi Memorial Museum) showcases the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. It first opened in Mumbai (then called Bombay), shortly after Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. The museum relocated several times before moving to Raj Ghat in 1961.
Shortly after Gandhi’s death, collectors began searching India for anything about Gandhi, including personal items, newspapers, and books – all of which are now either stored or displayed in the museum.
The Museum’s library is also a general studies library. The books are divided into two sections, those written by or about Gandhi and books on other subject matters. There are currently over 35,000 books or documents in the museum’s library.
