Ocean Discovery Centre @ Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI)

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) was founded to advance knowledge of the oceans and seas and to give people of all ages a unique experience.  Peter Benchley (1940-2006), author of Jaws, wrote that President John F. Kennedy had pointed out that 70% of the earth is covered by water, and yet mankind lavished more on discovering the moon that on the oceans of this planet: ‘The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute can be a pioneer in redressing that lunatic imbalance.’

The idea for a museum was initially formed in 1990, and the Institute created by a private act of the Bermuda parliament in 1992.  The site was excavated in 1995 and a year later construction began.  The Hon David J. Saul, Premier of Bermuda, laid the foundation stone in November 1996, and in July 1997 the Institute was opened by H.E. Thorold Masefield, Governor of Bermuda.  There have been many events and exhibitions since then.  

Besides the Ocean Discovery Centre (as it is now called) with its interactive exhibits, there is a harbourfront restaurant, there are films in the auditorium, and a range of explorer camps on offer.
