Police magistrates Court

The Police Magistrate’s Court, also known as Santa Anna’s Magistrates’ Court, was built in 1869.  It stands on the corner of Broad Street and Haffner Street, and though now abandoned, is still considered a historical landmark in Lagos.  In 1876 the Supreme Court was established, which introduced English Law to Nigeria.  The opposite is a statue to the Herbert Macaulay (1864-1946), said by many to be the founder of Nigerian nationalism. He was born here on Board Street and was influential in Nigeria’s independence.
