Point Britomart means the leap of survivors and describes an incident where Ngati Whatua forces drove their enemies off the headland with only a few surviving. The point was demolished to fill in Official Bay, Britomart is named after the British brig. HMS Brotomart, which visited Auckland in the 1840;s.
