Te Whatu was a waka mooring site at the mouth of the Horotiu/Ligar Canal, to be found at the present-day intersection of Shortland and Queen streets. It is a site of rich cultural significance to the Maoris. It is recognised as one of 75 Sites of Significance by the Maori Cultural Heritage Project.Â
