The Classic Yacht Association of New Zealand is based in Silo Park. It developed from a meeting of skippers in the NZ National Maritime Museum in 1995. As there was considerable interest, the Association was formed at an inaugural meeting on 8 May 1995, when an event programme was established for the following season. Sponsorship was given by Logan Clothing and the PCC, ensuring financial independence and membership grew. Today there are 350 members with 250 yachts.
Classic yachts represent an important aspect of New Zealand’s maritime history, the craft and skills developed by the founders of New Zealand boat building scene have laid the foundation of New Zealand’s success with modern boat building.
