Washington Waters Park is named after Washington Waters (1856-1948), Mayor of Southport 1919-21 and 1924-71, and an Alderman of the town who continued his involvement in local government as Chairman of Finance for Southport Town Council until he was 80. Waters came from England to Queensland in the ship Clara, arriving in Brisbane in February 1875. He was first elected to Nerang Shire Council in 1899 and in addition to his career in local government, Waters also worked for pioneering coach owners, Cobb and Co, was licensee for the first hotel in Burleigh Heads, and a farmer at Tallebudgera Creek. Washington Waters Park has a children’s playground with a variety of play equipment, as well as barbeques and picnic tables that overlook the Broadwater swimming enclosure and diving pontoon. The enclosure is patrolled by City of Gold lifeguards daily during the summer months.
